Cactus Cafe

Civil, private public places, chic willow
Placemats adorn a monumental mahogany bar
Where tonight, joyful patrons, diverse
People, digest courteous discourse and
Chivalrous discussions to the tune of
Whether a Creator or random chance
Is the reason for the present moment.
Little waffling over late night waffles,
Eggs, and coffee; talks of substance and
Circumstance ensuing long into the night;
Imbued by another round of signature,
Short stack, square, buttermilk pancakes milking
Ontological speculations until
Milked dry; driving everyone to drive themselves
Home before the talks turned to trite tautologies.

  1. “Cactus Cafe” is a real place located on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. An engineering student there during the late 1990’s, I would go to the Cactus Cafe during the day to study, drink coffee and from time to time, would end up seated next to a philosophy study group talking about existential subject matter. Whether they have a mahogany bar or not, I can’t remember. I’m not sure if they serve breakfast into the wee hours of the night either... poetic license, I suppose, is a good thing. How about we meet up at the Cactus Cafe and talk about it?
