My 5-7-5 haiku, “She’s like us in most every way” is my rebuttal to the likes of one atheistic doctor of psychology, Dr. Eric Sprankle. Mr. Sprankle, showing little toleration for the beliefs of billions of Christians, tweeted a disparaging and ugly comment regarding the Virgin Mary; on or about the day we Catholic’s celebrate Mary’s Immaculate Conception. (December 8, 2018). A celebration, by the way, recognizing Our Lady’s immaculate conception following an act of natural, human procreation by her parents. Of such purity Mary, a devout Jew of her period, full of God’s grace, grew in virtue and religion to the point where she was later able to make a fully informed, consensual, and complete gift of herself in the fulfillment of God’s will to incarnate as Man. Upon learning from an Angel that she had been chosen to become the Mother of God, the Messiah, she gave her consent; her fiat: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word.” Luke 1:38 And it was at this moment that Mary conceived the Christ; the Holy Spirit miraculously overshadowing her and in that instant, with great joy, Mary became the Mother of Our Lord. Psychology has a term for speaking outside of one’s “ken” of knowledge as if being an expert in one field automatically qualifies one to be an expert in multiple other fields where little to no competence exists: the Dunning-Kruger Effect. For Professor Sprankle, “a cognitive bias whereby people are incompetent at something and are unable to recognize their own incompetence,” provides us with a textbook example of its application. Mother Mary, our hope and seat of wisdom, pray for us!
