Thinking Caps

A shortage of thinking caps like face masks,

Scientists, now quacks, for fumbling their facts

Leave empty souls, stumbling souls, vacant souls.

“No shortage of face masks” is the reply,

But of good sense, the world is found lacking.

The god of progress it seems can be hacked.

Glass ceilings cracked, a new class of victims,

And core values are still under attack.

Extract from all this, history: fit in;

Absquatulate; don’t be late; holy ranks

Spared not, squat to the pressure; divided;

Too many factions; fractions of what could

Be. Blessed martyrs and blessed saints and

Painted Churches putting on thinking caps.

  1. 14 line, sonnet without perfect rhymes, 10 syllables/line (iambic pentameter)

    “In an effort to make their new churches feel more like the ancient Gothic structures of their homelands, these early settlers painted the walls, altars, and arches of their simple wooden sanctuaries in colorful patterns and clever tromp l'oeil images. These buildings came to be known as the Painted Churches of Texas.” THE PAINTED CHURCHES OF TEXAS: A BEAUTIFUL BLEND OF ART AND HISTORY
