Haven’t I Seen Your Photo?

Social media has come alive!

Faces and more faces, everywhere, and

Alive all at once; crowded; and crowds

Of faces splashing down one path: the

Virgin River, joyful and bubbling, the

Masses - our constant companion.

Clothed in shareable, shielding waders, and shoes,

Hundreds, wielding well worn walking sticks with

Ferrule-less tips, water frayed and splayed.

Haven’t I seen your photo?

Surely there’s one of yours and yours and

Yours; every last one of you I pass!

Funny, each known by God, with every hair counted,

Thick in these Narrows, multitudes wading,

Out in the world now by a search and browse.

  1. Inspired during our October vacation to southern Utah, on this particular day, to Zion National Park. While walking the easy and quite popular Riverside Walk trail leading to the more strenuous, Narrows, a hike involving wading along the flowing Virgin river bottom through a spectacular slot canyon, I couldn’t help thinking every face I looked at that day, and there were hundreds, was a face known by God, but also the face of a person whose photo, given a very high probability in today’s world, can be potentially known now by anyone on the globe with access to social media. What about the billions of people who lived and died before the advent of social media? no less known by God.
